How a Tom Tom will improve your life

Until a few weeks ago, I’d never heard of Tom Toms. I’ve recently moved, and a visiting friend told me she’d got there by following the directions from her new Tom Tom. I asked whether she’d taken up drumming and the drums had started talking to her. However, she looked at me incredulously at my lack of knowledge, and told me they were the most popular form of Sat. Nav.

Sat. Nav. is not something that’s ever appealed to me. Whenever I want to go anywhere, I look it up on the map. Recently, I’ve started using journey planners, but I still look at the map. Sat. Navs seem lazy to me, another unnecessary reliance on technology.

However, like any good advertising campaign, the name stuck with me, and a few days later I ended up looking it up. Browsing online shopping sites, I realised that not only do Tom Toms work in cars, but you can get them for motorbikes, PDAs and mobile phones.

However, none of this information has answered the question that’s been really bugging me ever since I first heard the word ? why are they called Tom Toms? After trawling through online shopping sites, I came across the official website, and I’ve discovered there is some link with my initial reaction ? drumming. There is the tenuous link that only advertisers can imagine of a computer system being linked to signaling and communication (the original form of this kind of drumming).

I’ve always had a slight paranoia about what I know know are called TomTom Rider. The idea of having a device that constantly tracks my location in my car freaks me out. However, I know this is exactly what I have with my mobile phone. And I guess, the same way I can leave my phone at home, I could leave my Tom Tom at home. For some bizarre reason, it is easy to forget these devices are not attached to us like some weird symbiont.

I also think I like the element of adventure involved in finding my way to new and exotic locations. Well, the exotic might be a bit far fetched, as the last two long distance places I’ve tried to find are friend’s houses in suburban Cardiff and London. However, even today, dropping off a form to a friend, I enjoyed finding the right road, and the right green gate without technological assistance.

Having said this, it is not always that easy, and invariably I get lost and end up pulling my hair out in desperation as I’ve made yet another wrong turning. I’ve also discovered, since perusing the web, that Tom Toms can tell you where speed cameras are located. Given I’m one speeding offence off losing my license, this might be a godsend.

So, next time I’m pulling up every five minutes to read the map, shouting and swearing, and getting hot and bothered, could someone remind me that maybe having a device in the car telling me where to go might be a really good idea.

Motorola Announce a Quintet of Handsets

Let’s take a sneaky peek at five new mobile phones that are soon to be released by Motorola. I will give you the lowdown on the five new handsets: the A810, ZN200, VU20, V9x and a mystery handset that is so far unnamed!

We will start with the A810 which was originally announced in April. It is a mid range touch screen GSM phone featuring a pretty basic 2 mega pixel camera, microSD expandable memory, and Bluetooth. It will be available in black and white colour schemes, and is thought to be aimed at the Chinese market rather than the rest of the world. Unfortunately a full spec has not yet been released, so we will have to wait in anticipation for more details of the A810.

Secondly we will look at the ZN200. This looks like a fairly basic GSM slider handset that will appeal to the budget and pre-pay market. It features a 176 x 220 pixel display, 2 mega pixel camera, microSD expandable memory, FM radio and Bluetooth. The ZN200 doesn’t fill you with excitement and enthusiasm but if you are watching your pennies it may be a good option.

Next we move onto the VU20 which looks very similar to the PEBL U6 and U9. It looks like the VU20 is going to be a PEBL style version of the RAZR2 V9. We know that it is a UMTS/HSDPA 2100 tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 handset but unfortunately that is all the information that has been released so far!

The V9x is an upgrade to the original RAZR2 V9. It is rumoured to come with GPS satellite navigation. It should also have the original features of the V9 which are a 2 mega pixel camera, HSDPA (3.5G), dual QVGA displays with haptic feedback, microSD expandable memory and Bluetooth. We await a full spec to be announced soon.

* Be in good physical shape - You don’t have to be a triathlete but you should be able to swim and take the stress of diving. A physical exam is a good idea before diving.

* Don’t hold your breath - Remember to always breathe slowly and in a relaxed manner and to exhale fully. Don’t take short, shallow breathes and never hold your breath. Holding your breath underwater can lead to lung injuries and worse, in the extreme case.

* Ascend slowly and with control - As you ascend you are ridding your body of nitrogen in your tissues and bloodstream. If you ascend too quickly, you risk decompression sickness. Always do a safety stop at 15 feet for at least 3 minutes after deeper dives. After your safety stop, do not propel yourself to the surface either. Ascend that last 15 feet very slowly also.

* Check your equipment - Checking equipment is especially important if you are renting. If you own your regulator and haven’t dove in a while, it should also be serviced to make sure it is working properly. Do a check of the regulator hoses also.

* Relax - Being relaxed and comfortable underwater is key to a successful dive. If something happens, stop, breathe, think and act. Do not panic and rush to the surface. But observing this safety rule could be key to a safe dive.

* Plan your dive and dive your plan - You will hear this in your training (or you should) and you should follow this advice. Prior to going under, you and your buddy should know the max depth you will go, the amount of bottom time you’ll have and how much air you will start to ascend with. Check your air supply often. You should also agree on the hand signals you will use to communicate underwater.

This is just the beginning of scuba diving safety rules. However, if you follow the above list you increase your chances of a safe dive. Have fun!

The move ends when you bring your right foot under your left foot at the same time that you are bringing your left hand back in front of your body so that it ends back on the floor. You should be in the push up position again. The down rock is a complicated set of steps that should be practiced individually before you attempt to put them altogether.

Another major move that is performed in break dancing is the freeze. This is where the dancers actually stop moving for a short period of time. There are difference ways to perform a freeze move during the dance. An example of a freeze move in a break dance is outlined below. Kneel with one knee on the floor and one up. Put your left elbow on the side of the raised knee and your right elbow on your hip. Carefully roll on your hands, your weight should be shifted from your feet to your hands and you should be able to balance yourself on your hands while your feet are off the floor.

If anyone has watched a break dance performance they will remember seeing one move that is known worldwide and that is the worm. The worm requires that the dancer be flexible. To perform the worm, you start in the push up position but your body is flat on the floor rather than rose. With you arms, push you feet off the floor as hard and high as you can. As r legs begin to fall back down to the floor, lift your abs and roll up all the way to your chest. This motion should be repeated as quickly as you can do it. It is supposed to resemble the motion of a worm that is inching along the ground.

Throughout history the art of breakdance did not refer to the actual dancing that was being performed. Instead it was meant to talk about the breaks in the music.
